A reliable turbocharger model must distinguish between isentropic efficiency and mechanical efficiency (η_mec). Manufacturer maps typically provide a global efficiency value, which is insufficient for calculating precise turbine outlet temperatures. This is vital for modeling the thermal behavior of exhaust after-treatment devices during catalyst light-off phases.
To isolate mechanical friction losses from thermal transfers, an adiabatic measurement methodology was developed at Ecole Centrale de Nantes. By regulating oil inlet temperature such that the mean oil temperature matches the mean gas temperatures in the compressor and turbine, internal heat transfer is minimized. The study utilized standard automotive turbochargers, including VGT and wastegate-regulated models. Friction power (Pf) was then derived from the enthalpy variation of the oil flow.
The research tested three commercial oil grades: SAE 0W30, SAE 10W40, and SAE 10W60. Dynamic viscosity was modeled using the Vogel equation. At low TC speeds, friction power can be equivalent to compressor power. This study used coast-down tests based on the moment of inertia to validate the thermodynamic results.
